How to Measure Your RIC Wire Length at Home

— Why Proper Length Matters & How to Request a Replacement
For Receiver-in-Canal (RIC) hearing aids, wire length is a key factor in comfort, stability, and overall hearing performance. Most users don’t realize that a wire that’s even one size off can cause whistling, discomfort, or a poor fit.
By default, the wire length attached to new hearing aids is size 3. However, every ear is different, so measuring your personal wire length is essential.
Below is a simple guide to help you measure your wire length accurately at home.

1. Step-by-Step: How to Measure Your RIC Wire Length at Home

You can use the wire measurement tool included in your package. It’s designed to help you identify the correct length visually and accurately.

Step 1: Prepare the Measurement Tool

The tool has colored bands representing different wire lengths.
· For the right ear → the red side faces outward
· For the left ear → the blue side faces outward
Hang the tool vertically next to your ear.

Step 2: Position the Tool on Your Ear

Place the tool so that its top aligns with where the hearing aid would sit behind your ear.
You can:
· Stand in front of a mirror, or
· Ask a friend or family member to help check the alignment
This ensures an accurate reading.

Step 3: Identify Which Colored Band Aligns With the Top of Your Ear Canal

Look at the bottom of the tool:
· See which colored band lines up with the top of your ear canal
· That colored band corresponds to your ideal wire length (e.g., 1, 2, 3, etc.)
This method directly mimics how the receiver wire sits when worn.

Step 4: Compare With Your Current Wire (Default = 3)

Since our hearing aids come with size 3 by default:
· If your measurement also matches 3, your current wire is likely appropriate
· If the tool shows 1, 2, or 4, you may need a different length for optimal comfort and performance

2. Why Proper Wire Length Matters

· Choosing the right length helps ensure:
· Better sound quality
· Lower whistling/feedback
· Improved comfort
· Better stability and retention
· More accurate directional microphone performance
· A more discreet appearance
Even a one-size difference can noticeably change your daily experience.
